Disney’s Mulan JR. is an action-packed stage adaptation of the 1998 Disney film Mulan and the story Fa Mulan by Robert D. San Souci. The score by Matthew Wilder, David Zippel, Stephen Schwartz, Jeanine Tesori and Alexa Junge includes favorites like “Reflection,” “Honor to Us All,” and “I’ll Make a Man Out of You,” as well as new songs created by Bryan Louiselle and Patricia Cotter.

The story follows the adventures of a free-spirited and courageous young girl named Mulan (played by Lillian Peng). Her world is turned upside-down when the Huns invade, and the Emperor declares that one man from every family must serve in the Imperial Army. Mulan’s father (played by Neil Grover) agrees to serve, although an old war wound prevents him from walking properly and guarantees him certain death. Mulan disguises herself as a man, and accompanied by her trusty dragon Mushu (played by Jonah Weber), slips away in the night. Her disguise holds and she successfully joins the army in her father’s place. The adjustment to army life is difficult, but Mulan perseveres and is transformed into a celebrated and courageous soldier.

Working with director Terri Schulman, musical director Laura Harris, and choreographer Terry Rowe, more than 50 Thompson Brook fifth and sixth graders have been rehearsing both on stage and behind the scenes in dozens of different roles since the first week of January. The annual TBS Spring Musical is sponsored by the PTO. Proceeds from previous years’ productions have helped purchase such after school theatre wish list items as backstage headsets, character microphones, scenery, and props.
